Citi Raises Its 2026 Returns Outlook

Chief Financial Officer Gonzalo Luchetti raised the full-year return on tangible common equity (RoTCE) outlook to above 11%, up from the earlier 10-11% target range.

Management expects net interest income excluding Markets to grow in the mid-to-high 6% range in 2026, supported by client activity and deposit growth. The full-year efficiency ratio is expected to remain below 60%.

During questioning from Truist Securities and Wells Fargo Securities analysts, Luchetti cautioned that fourth-quarter Markets revenues could decline more than the typical 20% sequentially. He attributed the expected moderation to seasonal trading patterns rather than unusual business deterioration.

C Balances Buybacks With Capital Requirements

Citi returned $4.1 billion to common shareholders during the quarter, including approximately $3 billion through repurchases. Its Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio stood at 12.8%.

In exchanges with UBS and Morgan Stanley analysts, Luchetti reaffirmed the directional 13.1% capital target, with an anticipated regulatory minimum of 12.1% in January 2028.

He emphasized that the capital trajectory reflects existing regulations. Potential Basel III and other regulatory revisions could change future requirements, while capital deployment must balance shareholder distributions with business growth.

Citi's Services Franchise Sustains Strong Growth

Chief Executive Officer Jane Fraser emphasized the strength of Services, where revenues increased 15% year over year to $6.6 billion. Average deposits increased 16%, while RoTCE reached 31.2%.

Fraser attributed the performance to deeper institutional relationships, new client mandates and growing demand for cross-border payments and liquidity solutions. She highlighted opportunities among fintech companies and digital-asset participants.

During analyst discussions, management acknowledged that deposit growth should moderate over time. Nevertheless, Fraser emphasized continued technology investment and the franchise's ability to attract clients with limited attrition.

C Sees Momentum in Markets, Banking and Wealth

Markets revenues increased 6%, supported by 14% growth in Equities and 4% growth in Fixed Income. Fraser identified prime services as a priority, with balances increasing more than 40%.

Banking revenues increased 6%, including loan-hedging impacts. Investment Banking benefited from 77% growth in equity underwriting fees, although Corporate Lending faced pressure from narrower loan spreads.

Wealth revenues advanced 15%, while net new investment assets reached $38 billion. During an Evercore ISI exchange, Luchetti attributed slower investment-fee growth partly to earlier strategic decisions and reiterated confidence in reaching Wealth's 15-20% near-term RoTCE target.

Citi Expands AI Investment and Automation

Fraser described artificial intelligence as an increasingly important contributor to operational efficiency, product development and customer service.

She reported that AI-enabled processes have accelerated product launches by approximately 30-40%. Additionally, 14,000 engineers use the company's agentic coding platform, while technology vendor spending has declined 30% year over year.

Responding to a Wells Fargo Securities analyst, Fraser stated that financial benefits from AI and automation have substantially exceeded related investments year to date. She also emphasized cybersecurity safeguards and dismissed concerns about significant Services deposit flight resulting from AI-driven competition.

C Maintains Its Focus on Sustainable Returns

Management's broader message centered on improving profitability while funding technology, talent and client-focused growth. Fraser reiterated Citi's 11-13% near-term RoTCE objective and longer-term ambition of sustainable 14-15% returns.

Execution priorities include maintaining expense discipline, expanding higher-return businesses and completing legacy divestitures. Management continues to balance those objectives against capital requirements and changing economic conditions.

Citi's Zacks Rank and Style Scores Signal Caution
